TAG Heuer is a famous Swiss brand of watches. This brand is popular for chronograph and sports watches.Heuer was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer; hence, the name. Nine years later, Edouard Heuer was able to patent the first ever crown winding mechanism used for pocket watches.
It was in 1911 when the company received another patent for the first ever dashboard chronograph called "Time of Trip." "Time of Trip" was designed for use in automobiles and aircrafts. It had 2 big hands to indicate the time and 2 small hands to indicate the trip's duration.
It was in 1914 that Edouard Heuer introduced the first wrist chronograph. In 1916, the company introduced the first stopwatch, called "Micrograph," that accurately measured centisecond.
In 1933, Edouard Heuer introduced a dashboard timer called "Autavia." This was designed for automobile and aviation use. The company began to supply chronographs for German pilots from 1935 to the early 1940s. It was also in the 1940s when the company introduced their new chronograph models that had a 3rd register that functioned as a full calendar. These chronographs came in stainless steel and gold case.
In 1950s, Heuer began producing watches for Abercrombie & Fitch, an American retailer. The watches were called "Seafarer" and "Auto-Graph." The "Seafarers" were built with special dials that indicated low and high tides. This dial was also useful in tracking moon phases. On the other hand, the "Auto-Graph" watches had a tachymeter scale. These watches became very useful to rally drivers and navigators for the scale. In the late 1950s, the company manufactured more dashboard timers such as Master Time, Monte Carlo, Super Autavia, Sebring, and Auto-Rallye. These models were manufactured until 1980s.
In 1960s, Tag Heuer manufactured more chronographs that became popular to car racers. In fact, there were special chronograph watches that the company manufactured with logos and names of racing teams and game sponsors. The chronograph models that were designed during this period were Autavias and Carreras. It was, however, in 1969 when Tag Heuer, in partnership with Hamilton and Breitling, introduced the world's first ever automatic chronographs. Monaco, Carrera, and Autavia models were the first ones to have automatic chronographs.
In 1975, Tag Heuer introduced a digital chronograph called "Chronosplit." It had dual LCD and LED displays. The later versions of this watch had 2 LCD displays and did not include LED anymore.
It was only in 1985 when the company we now know as TAG Heuer was formed. Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG), a manufacturer of high-tech stuff, acquired the Heuer company.
Today, TAG Heuer still continues to manufacture chronograph watches. Some of the chronograph lines that they manufacture are Aquaracer, Carrera, Formula One, and Monaco. Some of the features of these watches are automatic/self-winding mechanisms, sapphire crystals, and water-resistant cases among others.
Their new lines of watches include Monaco V4, Carera Calibre 360, and Monaco 69. They also have the Professional Golf Watch line which was developed with great golf player Tiger Woods.
